SupJustin.com: You, Me, and Everyone We Know Interview

Many more pictures available for viewing here.
Pictures and interview from the band’s show on 12.12.08 in Los Gatos, CA.

For the record, please state your name and role in the band.
Rico: Guitar
Noel: Guitar
Ben: I sing and technically play the keyboards.

How has this current tour with Karate High School and I Set My Friends on Fire been so far?
Ben: It’s been great. We’re really surprised with how many people are coming out. This tour has far outreached our expectations. That’s not to say we had low expectations, but you never go on tour thinking “I’m going to be the man” or “We’re gonna be really sweet.” There’s always a worry in the back of your head.. We’ve been doing well in places we haven’t been, like here in Los Gatos and just throughout California. It’s really our first actual time out here. There’s just been a ton of people out to see us and it’s awesome.

How has your new EP [So Young, So Insane] been doing compared to your first EP [Party for the Grown and Sexy]?
Ben: It’s going well.
Noel: It’s catching on quicker.
Ben: We’re finding that people know the songs when we show up for shows. More people know the new songs than our old songs, which is weird. As of recently, we’ve given away about 30,000 copies of our first EP and probably sitting around 12-15,000 of the new EP.
Noel: That we know of. That’s kind of how new releases go though. You get new fans who don’t really know the old stuff, which is totally fine.

Why did you guys decide to release your new EP for free?
Rico: To get exposure.
Ben: Yeah. It’s quicker. We’d probably sell a couple hundred copies the first week, but we gave away 5000 the first day. Labels would love to see any band move that number in a week these days, especially a band at our level. They’d want that in a week and we did that in just one day. It’s just an easier way to get people to know us. People don’t make money on records, they make money on tour. We’d rather have people at shows – buying shirts and just supporting us rather than just selling CDs and playing crappy shows.

Speaking of that, knowing that you guys are unsigned, how are you able to make money to be able to tour and such if you give away your music away for free?
Noel: We sell it on certain places – Smartpunk, iTunes, etc. It’s just a way to flood everybody with it. We make money selling t-shirts on tour.
Ben: You can buy it. We do sell it. There’s an option to buy it if you want the physical copy. We make the CDs our self on tour because we’re poor.

Do a lot of people actually buy the CD and support you guys?
Rico: A large amount of people even knowing it’s available for free will still buy it.
Ben: We’re actually out of them, we need to make more tonight or tomorrow (laughs). And gas is really cheap right now.
Noel: That helps out so much. The cost of touring is literally cut in half from the last time we came out here.
Ben: We lost $3-4000 the last time we came to California. Our van went out twice on this tour, we were able to fix that in sort of no sweat.
Noel: Had it been April, we never could have done that.
Ben: Yeah. Had it been Spring time, we would have been living in California and been a West coast band.

What’s been your favorite tour this year [2008]?
Noel: That’s some dangerous territory seeing that we’re on an tour right now with some awesome dudes. They’ve all had their ups and downs, well not downs really. They’ve all had their perks. The Sing It Loud tour with Take Cover was fucking sweet.
Ben: We made like best friends with them.
Rico: We’ve never really been on a tour where we didn’t like the people.
Ben: We’ve had great luck with that… not touring with crappy people. The tour with Dear Hunter was just phenomenal for me personally because of the showmanship of every band.
Rico: I was a fan of Dear Hunter before that tour. It was the first time ever going on tour being familiar with a band’s music.
Ben: Professionally in addition, personally wise, that was one of the sweetest tours to be on.

What are your plans for 2009?
Ben: In January and February we’re going to write for a full length. Unless like Jesus comes back and he’s doing a rock tour. After that we’re going to do.SXSW and hopefully do a national tour in addition as a part of that. We’re going to tour until we’re told to stop touring and record. Basically that’s it. We just want to keep pushing the EP.
Noel: If we have the means to, we’d like to do a full length at some point and get that under our belts.
Ben: Record it and hopefully release it properly in 2010.

Have you guys heard anything from any record labels about a potential signing?
Noel: Maybe, maybe not.
Ben: People say “hey” and what not.
Noel: There’s nothing formal going on, just a lot of handshakes.
Rico: We’ve always had relationships with people from different labels. It’s tough to tell when they say “The new EP sounds great” if they’re really interested.
Ben: Like if they’re saying it in a buddy kind of way or as an investor.
Ben: We try not to sweat it.
Noel: We just stopped worrying about that. We just assumed it’s never going to happen and continue making music. It’s a good mind set to work with.
Rico: It’s not that we’re thinking negatively. The way that the industry is right, it’s very possible to be an unsigned band and still do very well.
Ben: It’s like making a plan for life that includes winning the lottery. Odds of it happening are slim.

Anything else you’d guys like to say?
Ben: Thank you everyone for the continuing support. We’d be completely screwed without people coming to shows. Thanks for taking the time to do this Justin. Everything that happens keeps us motivated and sweating on stage every night upon thousands and thousands of people (laughs). Really though, thanks everyone for everything.

SupJustin.com: Interview with Shane from Promise of Redemption / Valencia

Me: For the record, what is your name and role in Promise of Redemption?
Shane: My name is Shane, and I basically am Promise of Redemption haha! I play guitar and sing, and in the studio play everything pretty much.
Me: How did Promise of Redemption come about getting started?
Shane: Well I started Promise of Redemption while i was in high school. I was in a band called Attracted to Miss and I just used POR as a different form of writing music and trying new things. I also wanted to try something that was all acoustic and simple.
Me: When The Flowers Bloom... came out over a year ago. I personally enjoyed it greatly. What kind of reactions did you receive from it?
Shane: I think people who could take it for what it was liked it, however, I think it was a little deep for some people. For the most part people appreciated it and welcomed it with open arms.
Me: You are also the singer for Valencia. Do you find it hard balancing both projects?
Shane: Nope, I love music and love writing songs. Trying to balance playing out live as POR is tough since Valencia's schedule is pretty tough.
Me: What is the status on Promise of Redemption? Any plans for another album or tour?
Shane: I am always writing new material and trying to figure out ways for me to be able to play live. So I am definitely working on it and will have plans for a ne w record soon!
Me: How did a part from the song "Remember the First Day" come about appearing in Valencia's "Where Did You Go"?
Shane: I wanted to tie the two messages together from the Valencia record to the Promise of Redemption record. If you notice, "Where Did You Go?" is not the only song on the record that has POR lyrical ties in it. It was just important for myself to bring the two records together.
Me: Who are your musical influences?
Shane: Springsteen, Petty, Hot Water Music, NoFx, Bright Eyes, many more!
Me: What are you currently listening to?
Shane: I actually am getting into a lot of different styles of music, a band called The Coral, Bob Dylan, The Beach Boys, Kings of Leon, Cat Power, The Gaslight Anthem, Sigur Ros.
Me: Thanks so much for this opportunity. Is there anything you would like to say?
Shane: Thank you very much! Go pick up the Promise of Redemption record and give it to someone for the holidays!

SupJustin.com: Get yrrrr laugh on.

A woman goes into a tattoo parlor and tells the tattoo artist that she wants a tattoo of a turkey on her right thigh just below her bikini line. She also wants him to put “Happy Thanksgiving” under the turkey. So the guy does it and it comes out looking really good. The woman then instructs him to put a Santa tattoo with “Merry Christmas” up on her left thigh. So the guy does it and it comes out looking good, too. As the woman is getting dressed to leave, the tattoo artist asks, “If you don’t mind, could you tell me why you had me put such unusual tattoos on your thighs?” She says “I’m sick and tired of my husband complaining all the time that there’s nothing good to eat between Thanksgiving and Christmas!”
