Music Monday #1

Today marks the beginning of a new feature called “Music Monday.” This feature will occur every Monday and is a way for me to showcase a band/album that I feel is worth mention.

The first installment revolves around The Get Up Kids, specifically their album Guilt Show. This album is perfect for enjoyment while driving down the freeway with the windows down on a hot summer day. Streaming above is “The One You Want” which I personally believe is the catchiest/best song from the album.

I hope you enjoy this artist/album/song and feature.

SupJustin.com: Sweet Brag Tour | Review

Sweet Brag Tour
4/21/09 Slims, San Francisco, CA
Review conducted by Mike Okubo.

I went to the Sweet Brag Tour in San Francisco not knowing a lot about what to expect. Most of the shows I go to are of the pop-punk/trendy scene variety and a show full of heavier bands was a little new to me.

Doors opened a bit late and the first band, Emarosa, came on about five to ten minutes past schedule. Emarosa is one of those bands who have been around for some time honing their sound and live performance. It definitely showed in their set as they played about five to six songs in a very professional matter. There was a lot of in-unison headbanging and their singer worked Slim’s small stage left to right. The crowd, albeit fairly into it, seemed entertained.

Sky Eats Airplane we’re next. They hit the stage and the crowd movement began. They played about seven songs and posed a very good warm-up act for what was to come. SEA has built themselves a nice little niche of popularity over the past year or so and a lot of the kids seemed decently into it.

A Day To Remember, despite being a little more melody-heavy than all of the other bands on this tour, obviously were the band that drew a lot of the crowd to this show. As soon as the lights went down, everyone seemed to know what was coming. When Jeremy McKinnon stepped up to the microphone, all he needed was about two syllables of lead into the obvious crowd pleasing opener “The Downfall Of Us All” and the crowd went off, chanting, singing and yelling along. They played a mix of songs that was a little heavy on FTWHH, but obvious crowd pleasers were when Mike from TDWP came out during “I’m Made Of Wax, Larry…” and the circle pit which engulfed the whole venue front to back on multiple songs.

I have heard about The Devil Wears Prada’s amazing live performance, despite never catching any more of a glimpse than the last song or two at Warped last summer. The “Prada” chants in between sets exemplified excitement to the max. The lights went down and the band came out and ripped right into “Reptar, King Of The Ozone” exciting the crowd and starting movement galore. Slim’s seemed to barely be able to contain the rowdy nature of the sell-out crowd, despite the fact that some had emptied out following ADTR’s perfomance. They bruised through a solid set which included such songs as “Goats On A Boat,” “Still Fly,” “HTML Roolz Dood” and the encore of “Hey John…” My first experience of a TDWP perfomance will be one for the books on this day to remember (pun intended.)

SupJustin.com: Hit The Lights Interview

Alternative Press Tour
4/1/09 Grand Ballroom, San Francisco, CA

For the record, please state your name and role in the band.
I’m Kevin and I play guitar.

I know the tour just barely started… How has it been so far?
It’s been amazing and constant fun. Everyone gets along and is down to hang and party.

How did you guys come about going on this tour?
To my knowledge, AP offered it to us. I don’t know what made them want to offer it to us, but we were definitly stoked. It’s a great start to the year. We’re glad we got it and glad to be here.

As far as coming from a small town from Ohio, how is it being out on a national trek like this?
We’ve all toured before, so we’ve gotten lucky enough to be one of those bands that have worked hard to do this. We aren’t like one of those MySpace bands who get signed quick and get thrown in a bus to tour the world. That’s cool for them, but we did it the old fashion way. My first tour was in a car. I was holding equipment while I was driving. I then graduated to a van, then to a bigger van and so on. One of our favorite things is being able to see all the best places in the world that hardly anyone gets to see.

Did the song writing process change after Colin left?
It actually didn’t change at all. Colin was a really never the writer. It was always mostly Nick, Dave, and Omar who would write and Colin would sing. The songs belong to the band, so when Colin left luckily the only thing that changed was the voice coming out of the band. The songs were still written by the same people. I’m glad everything stayed the same.

I know you guys just worked with Rob Freeman. What was that about?
We recored an EP with him that’s coming out this summer. On the EP will be two cover songs, two acoustic songs (of previous tracks), and two new songs. One new song we did with John Feldmann and another new one with Mark Trombino. I think it’s going to be something different. We kind of explored a new sound because it’s just an EP. We threw in a few little surprises that hopefully people will like.

I know you guys are good friends with Time and Distance, who also just worked with Rob Freeman. Are you guys stoked to hear their new record? How do you think it’ll turn out?
I forget who, but someone in the band (Hit The Lights) heard a few of their new songs and said it sounded pretty good. We’ve all known those guys for a while and have been through so much with them. We’re stoked they recorded with Rob. Rob is honestly great at what he does and can make any band sound awesome, especially when the band is great already, like Time and Distance.

What CD are you looking forward to most this year?
The new Reign Supreme record. I saw some studio footage and it sounds mean as hell. They’re good guys and their last album was amazing.

Any plans for a new full length by the way?
Currently we’re booked with tours for the whole year. We’re doing this one, Warped Tour, and then two little tours. After we’re done though we plan on hitting the studio, probably in late fall or early winter. Our new record will probably be out on a new label. Hopefully 2010 will be our year.

Anything else you’d like to say?
Grab our record if you’re out. Buy it, burn it, borrow it from a friend, download it… just enjoy it. Tell friends about us and come out to a show of ours.

* For the record, my friend Mike Okubo assisted with conducting the interview.
