Music Monday #13

I am a huge sucker for catchy pop-punk when the weather is hot. Streaming above is “Boy With The Microphone” from Action Item. The song is off their most recent EP, which can be purchased here. Want to know something cool? There is a remix by The Secret Handshake of the song streaming above also on the EP and it’s pretty darn good.

Music Monday #12

Streaming above is something I loved when I was 16 and still do. Have you ever heard something and said “Why didn’t this guy/band get huge?” Well that’s what I think about every time I listen to Mark B. Above is “Bigger and Better Things” off his debut EP, Things Markb. Mark’s MySpace has been deleted and his PureVolume hasn’t been updated in years… so I don’t think he’s making music anymore. It’s a shame, this guy had talent.

SupJustin.com: Kenny Vasoli Interview

The BBQ Across America Tour
7/7/09 Empire Theatre, Stockton, CA

Where did the name Person L come from?
K: Well, I wanted to name the band Person L, like the word, based on the idea of having musicians come in and out; having a commune of musicians and not really having a set band. I was listening to Kid A (album by Radiohead) and I wanted to do something along the lines of representing a person and a letter.

Bringing out your different side of creativity with Person L, why not make the creative shift in The Starting Line?
K: I kind of tried to do that for a little bit and introduce all my influences in The Starting Line, but I quickly realized that there’s a place for all the influences and not necessarily all of them fit into what The Starting Line should be. It didn’t feel right and not all of the guys were into it and it was far be it for me to try to force the rest of the guys to like everything that I like. It was much easier to be cut and dry that this is what The Starting Line music is and everything else would go into this [Person L].

There’s a lot of bands out there that you have definitely inspired to be the band they are today, so what bands inspired you?
K: From an early age, Green Day and Nirvana. From there, Face to Face. Face to Face was probably the reason that I was in The Starting Line and made that music. Then it snowballed into Radiohead. Radiohead was my next big thing after that and then Battles and all sorts of other wacky stuff.

Being that Person L is really Do It Yourself, what kind of challenges have you come across?
K: Basically, just trying to fund the whole thing is the biggest challenge. You know, we didn’t really start with anything so we had to build from the ground up to put out the record. It’s hard to do it by yourself. There’s not much promotion that goes into it. A lot of people are like, ‘Wow, you just put out a record?’ and you’re just like, ‘Oh, yeah, it was a year ago,’ and that’s how I advertise [laughs]. I guess just getting the word out and trying to keep it above the surface have been the biggest challenges. It’s all balanced out by getting to do what you want to do though.

What song off Initial means the most to you? or songs?
K: You know, it’s probably my least favorite song on the record, but ‘Storms’ probably means the most to me because that was like the song that started the Person L thing for me. I had broken up with my current girlfriend the day before I wrote that and I was just in a bad spot and needed a way to express myself. It had been a while since I had used the medium of song to feel better. A lot of the times I wrote songs because it was time to; I had to, but this was the first time in a long time that I wrote something just out of pure emotion.

Being two former front men of very established bands, do you and Ace [Enders] share common ground?
K: Yeah. We find ourselves talking about all sorts of common experiences together and out tribulations and everything. He’s always asking me about putting stuff out yourself and I’m always asking him about the way that he’s doing things. I think that we’re both learning from each other.

Are we going to see a new record from Person L or even The Starting Line?
K: The Starting Line DVD is coming out in November and there’s a live record with that. It came out really good and I’m really happy with how the documentary came out.
Was the live content of the album all over or was it done at one location?
K: It was one show. Our last Philadelphia show. I think there’s footage of the show on the DVD and the documentary and then the CD of the show. The documentary gives anybody a real good feel for what happened. You get a clear story. Person L recorded an album this February and we’re getting the artwork done right now and it should be out by September. I’m really happy with it.

Was the writing process any different from the first time you wrote for Person L?
K: Yeah. The first time it was mainly me and the drummer [Brian Medlin] and then Charley [Schnieder] and a little help from Brian Schmutz came in a little bit later in the process. This time, from the beginning, we have written all of the songs together and performed all together so it’s more of a band thing this time.
