Music Monday #19

I bring to you this "Music Monday" a band that I have recently discovered called Dreams of University. They're one of the best unsigned bands I have heard in a long time... real talk. It's funny how I heard of them... while waiting in the theatre for District 9 to start last week, the song streaming above, called "6:45," started playing over the speaker on the theatre radio. The song is off their recent EP, Morning Rearrangement, which can be purchased here. I suggest you keep your eyes peeled on them as I have a feeling they're going to get big soon.

Streaming is a new unreleased Cute Is What We Aim For demo called "Catch 22." Want to download it? Click here (right click, save target as). The final cut of the song was meant to appear on their next album... but as we all know, that won't be happening. It's kind of a shame if you ask me, I really like where their new style was headed. Shit happens though, enjoy.

New Hellogoodbye Songs [live] / Label & Album Info

I had a chance to talk with Forrest Kline from Hellogoodbye after their show last night in Stockton, CA about their status with Drive-Thru Records and their new album.

Are you still on Drive-Thru Records?
We don't know exactly. We're trying to figure it all out as soon as possible. The record is basically done and we don't know exactly when it's going to come out or what label it's going to come out on.

How is the new record different from your debut?

A lot of our music has always been sequence based. I used to just program a bunch of stuff and kind of jam to it. It's cool, but for this record I built a studio and started recording differently. I used different software and a whole bunch of different instruments. Everything is based on an actual performance of an instrument instead of building something up from sequencing. There is still keyboards and sequencing but more of in support of this time than it taking full control itself. In the end, the new record is just more real.

The band also performed two new songs last night that are going to appear on the new album.

You Sleep Alone

A Weekend At Pete Rose's Teaser #1

Here is the first teaser for Fall Out Boy's "A Weekend At Pete Rose's." Confused? Read an excerpt below from my recent interview with Pete Wentz.

What is a "A Weekend at Pete Rose's?"
I don't want to get too deep in to it because I want it to be somewhat of a surprise. It's a video that gives the internet what they want in a way. People always don't get what they want from us and this is one time when we deliver exactly that. Also, a lot of times we're known as a serious band... Just look at our video for "What a Catch." This will add levity to our band and let people know we do have a sense of humor. Look for some teasers for it in the next couple of weeks.

Dave Melillo Talks About CIWWAF

What is the status of Cute Is What We Aim For?
At the beginning of august I let Shaant know I was leaving the band. We we're waiting to make a statement after all the shows were done but I guess thats not the plan anymore.

Is Jeff also leaving the band also?
He left the same night... I just dont wanna speak for Jeff.

Why is CIWWAF breaking up?
At the beginning of July Mikey, Jeff, some family friends, and I sat down with Shaant. We told him the things he needed to change as far as attitude and demeanor goes. I want to make it known that I shut him out of my life after that. He needed to be on his own if he was going to do anything positive for himself. There was not a visible change in his attitude or work ethic when I got back to Buffalo, so I decided to live my own life.

Any idea when you'll be releasing a solo CD then?
I'm talking to Drive Thru right now... trying to work something out. There are also bigger things going on aside from my solo project though.

Can you say anything about that?
I don't want anything I do in the future to have the shadow of Cute Is What We Aim For looming over it. The association is already there and I'm not trying to cash in on it. So, in short... not yet.

Anything else you'd like to say?
Were going to talk about this, with everyone. I dont care if I need to talk to everyone individually. I know the parties at play, and I refuse to be made to look like I did something out of character. I woke up and did something for myself for one of the first times in my life. If that makes me a douchebag, so be it.

Music Monday #16

There's something strange going on in my head... Valencia was one of the first bands that got me in to pop-punk music in 2006. Since then the rest is history. Streaming is "The Space Between" off their debut full length, This Could Be a Possibility. The song starts off strong and never loses momentum making it the perfect recipe for a catchy pop-punk song. They're currently on the remainder of Warped Tour... So make sure to catch their set if they come to a city near you.

Pete Wentz Interview

Conducted on 8/7/09 via phone.

How's the tour with Blink-182 so far?
It's been awesome. The first couple of days we didn't really know what to do because we haven't gone on a non-headlining tour in like 6 years. It's been a lot of fun though. We haven't been practicing it so it sounds a little choppy, but we recently started playing a cover of "Don't Stop Believing." We literally never rehearsed it ever.

Why are you only in the "What a Catch" music video for like two seconds?
There are two reasons. First and foremost, when I was writing the lyrics for the song, it was written from Patrick's perspective... So it felt right for him to be the star of the video. Secondly, I feel like one of the things that really hinders Fall Out Boy is me. Sometimes the name Pete Wentz puts a black cloud over things, so I wanted to minimize my role in it. I know this only increases people believing this is our swan song, but to be honest, this is how the video was going to be shot no matter what. If it's the last music video we ever do, we'll be happy with how it turned out. I'm happy with the way it turned minus my amazing CGI scene. Someone got trigger happy and put up the wrong version of the video. A new version should be online shortly. [It's now up and you can watch the new version here]

A lot of people want a Take This To Your Grave "version two." Do you feel any pressure towards that?
Not really. I think it becomes a problem for all bands that have been around for a while. There are people who want you to change your sound, stay the same, or be in between. We shoot for the people in between. We try to keep elements from Take This To Your Grave and From Under The Cork Tree that we like and at the same time try to expand our sound. We're 7 years older than when we wrote the album and so are a lot of our fans. I'm not saying we hate TTTYG, but it just wouldn't be authentic if we stayed the same.

Are there any plans to release a demo/b-sides album?
There are none currently, but maybe at some point we'll release one. I think anyone who is really in to a band always wants to hear stuff like that. A couple months ago I released a demo on the internet called "7-9 Legendary". It was just like a garage band demo that was never going to make it on to an album. I was like "If I was a fan I'd want to hear demos and such" so I released it.

Trailers were released years ago for Release The Bats 2. Is it ever going to be released?
I don't know. We compiled all the footage and started to put it together and then we were like "This stuff is too old. Does it even make sense anymore? Does anyone care?" It's one of those things were we have all the footage and maybe it'll see the light of day at some point, or maybe not. It just feels like it's really outdated.

Is the Clandestine "Ice Cream Headache Lurker" shirt about the LiveJournal fan site?
Yeah, it is. All of the people who go there know what the shirt is about. It's nice to make something for a certain segment of people sometimes and that's what it is. It should be coming out in the next collection.

How do you handle Fall Out Boy being accused of "selling-out?"
It used to really get to me. The thing I've come to realize is every time we do something like product placements in a music video, people don't understand labels don't give you enough money for it. If it wasn't for product placements we'd have to pay out of our own pocket because music videos aren't really popular anymore, but we still want to make them. For example, we had only a quarter of the budget for "Arms Race" and "I Don't Care" that we had for "Sixteen Candles." It sucked. It's a fine line that you have to walk. To me, as long as we aren't doing something simply because it's lucrative, it's fine. We don't get a dime from product placements. For legal reasons I can't say much, but $50,000 was donated to "No on 8" because we believe the product placement was misused in our video for "I Don't Care."

You've said on Twitter that there's a connection between the past five Fall Out Boy music videos. Was that planned since the first video?
It's not a direct narrative, but there is a connection between all of them that I want to point out someday. It's not something where you can watch the videos back to back and they'll be seamless, but there is an underlining theme through all them.

Anything else you'd like to say?
Make sure you always, always, always wash your hands after you go to the bathroom.

Hey Mercedes is the type of band that puts me in to a very nostalgic mood. Streaming is "Unorchestrated" off Loses Control. I say this a lot, but they deserved a lot more attention than they got when they were around. They had a good run though from 1995 to 2005. Loses Control was their second and last full lenth album and it ends with a "chill." The last line of the last song of the album, "Go On Drone," is picture perfect - We are all done.
